Altaruk
Fifteen-foot walls, five hundred spears, and the safest bed on the southern road.

A walled caravan fort on the southern Ring Road, 35 miles east of Balic, on the way to Amber Valley.
At a glance
- Size: a fort with a town inside it. A few hundred people live here, plus whoever is staying the night.
- Held by: three merchant houses jointly, House Wavir chief among them. Sharing it is the point: no single family can close the gates on the others.
- Business: tolls, stabling, water, and mercenary contracts. The garrison is professional, well paid, and happily bored.
- Discreet: nobody here asks your business.
What you'll see
A square of plain wall with a single gate, a yard big enough for two caravans, cisterns, a smithy, and a drinking hall that never quite closes. No decorations anywhere. That's the style.
The commander is a well-known preserver (a Gleaner, which on Aerun means the same thing), which is unusual enough that people mention it. There's a G4CE office just inside the gate: two desks, a contract board, and a bunk for anyone carrying the medallion.
Good to know
- Wizards, read this. Altaruk welcomes wizards of the gentler tradition and turns the other kind away at the gate. It isn't written down anywhere. Everyone knows.
- You get what you pay for. It's the safest bed on the southern road, and it's priced that way.
- About the garrison. Giants come down from the highland now and then to raid the fields west of here. The garrison deals with it. That's what the garrison is for.
